West Nile Virus: What You Need to Know

What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and rash.

How is West Nile Virus Spread?

WNV is spread to humans through bites from infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds.

What are the Symptoms of West Nile Virus?

Most people who are infected with WNV do not develop any symptoms. About 20% of people who are infected develop mild symptoms, such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and rash. Less than 1% of people who are infected develop serious symptoms, such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).

How is West Nile Virus Treated?

There is no specific treatment for WNV. Treatment is supportive, and may include rest, fluids, and pain relievers.

How Can I Prevent West Nile Virus?

There are a number of things you can do to help prevent WNV, including:

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when you are outdoors.
  • Make sure your window screens are in good repair.
  • Remove standing water from your property, such as in birdbaths and flowerpots.
  • Get vaccinated against WNV.
