Early Life and Education

Pete Buttigieg was born in South Bend, Indiana, on January 19, 1982. His father, Joseph, was a professor of literature, and his mother, Jennifer, taught English at Saint Mary's College. Buttigieg attended Harvard College, where he studied history and literature.

After graduating from Harvard, Buttigieg attended Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. He studied philosophy, politics, and economics there. After graduating from Oxford, Buttigieg worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company.

Political Career

Buttigieg's political career began in 2011, when he was elected to the South Bend Common Council. He served on the council for two terms, and during that time he chaired the council's Public Safety Committee.

In 2015, Buttigieg ran for mayor of South Bend. He won the election and became the city's youngest mayor in history.

As mayor, Buttigieg focused on revitalizing South Bend's economy and making the city more affordable and equitable. He also worked to improve the city's infrastructure and public safety.

In 2019, Buttigieg announced his candidacy for president of the United States. He was one of the first openly gay candidates to run for president.

Buttigieg's campaign focused on generational change and unity. He argued that the United States was at a crossroads and that it was time for a new generation of leaders to take over.

Buttigieg's campaign gained momentum throughout the primary season. He won the Iowa caucuses and several other states, and he was considered a top contender for the Democratic nomination.

However, Buttigieg ultimately suspended his campaign in March 2020. He endorsed Joe Biden, who went on to win the Democratic nomination and the presidency.

After Biden was elected president, he nominated Buttigieg to be the secretary of transportation.

Buttigieg was confirmed by the Senate in February 2021. Since taking office, he has focused on investing in infrastructure, making transportation more sustainable, and improving safety.

Buttigieg is married to Chasten Buttigieg, a teacher. The couple has two adopted children.

Buttigieg is an Episcopalian. He has said that his faith is important to him and that it informs his work as a public servant.
