Havertz Penalty Seals 2-0 Home Leg Victory
Blues Advance to Last 8 After Sterling First-Half Strike
Chelsea booked their place in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals on Tuesday with a 2-0 home leg victory over Borussia Dortmund, securing a 2-1 aggregate win. Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock in the first half, while Kai Havertz sealed the deal with a penalty in the second.
The Blues put in a commanding performance, controlling possession and creating numerous chances. Despite Dortmund's efforts to equalize, Chelsea's defense stood firm. With this victory, Chelsea advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2020/21 season.
After a cagey opening, Chelsea took the lead just before halftime. Sterling raced onto a through ball and fired a low shot past Dortmund goalkeeper Alexander Meyer. The Blues maintained their dominance in the second half, and Havertz's penalty in the 63rd minute put the result beyond doubt.
Chelsea manager Graham Potter praised his team's performance, saying, "We were excellent tonight. We played with great intensity and quality. It's a deserved result and we're thrilled to reach the quarterfinals." Dortmund manager Edin Terzic admitted that his team was second best, saying, "Chelsea were the better team. They played quicker and with more precision. We have to learn from this and come back stronger next season."
Chelsea's victory is a major boost for Potter, who has faced criticism in recent months. It also gives the Blues hope of ending the season on a high note after a disappointing Premier League campaign. The draw for the Champions League quarterfinals will be held on Friday, March 17.
